Re: LED work lamp

It should do up to 12" by 12" pieces easy enough. The flatness of the working surface starts to become an issue at some point, but there are workarounds. What I've done in the past is just mount a piece of wood to the table and shave the top off it with the mill to true it up. Easy to do, just takes...

Re: [complete] 3-axis CNC router

It has a bit more flex than I'm happy with, but I think that's due to the way I built the axis carriages. Once it warms up I've got a few mods to make which should stiffen it up some more. The driver board itself was a kit from hobbycnc.com, but I scratch-built the (very basic) power supply.

[complete] 3-axis CNC router

My main project last winter was this guy - a 3-axis CNC router. The idea is to take a standard off-the-shelf wood router and move it in 3 dimensions under computer control to carve out stuff. CAM software converts standard CAD drawings or vector images into a series of toolpath instructions (move to...

Re: LED work lamp

Oh yeah, totally easy. Start with a $10 ikea desk lamp (like http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/20370383), mount the magnifying glass to it, and make a donut-shaped PCB to hold the LEDs. The trick is to find a decent magnifying glass on the cheap.

Re: hackspace starter inventory

Depending on what people are interested in, I can loan some/all of the following: * old computer * variable temp soldering station * most hand tools you might need * CNC router * cordless drill * drill press * Woodworking power tools. These can't live at the space, but I can bring them or give acces...

Re: the space itself - location goals and requirements

Depends what the goals are, or what people are interested in doing. If it's just electronics/software hackery, most any space you can fit a couch and some bench space will do. If people are more interested in fabricating physical things, the requirements are somewhat higher. Depending on the tools, ...

Re: Introduce Yourself

Hey all, My name's Ryan, and I know a bunch of folk from the FB group, either personally or as friends of friends. I'm a software developer by day, and a tinkerer by night. I'm pumped that something like this is finally getting off the ground. I've been wanting to start one of these up for years, bu...
