Condo Intercom Faceplate

Condo Intercom Faceplate

Postby Kaldonis » Tue Mar 08, 2011 8:25 pm

So I've been meaning to do something about my terribly ugly intercom cover for a while now. I figured that rsilk's CNC might be up to the job and he has agreed to help me create a replacement. I'm not sure exactly what wood I'll use but I'll be staining dark to match my floors.

Here are some pictures of what it looks like now:

I think I'm happy with the actual design of the intercom so I won't change much there. The buttons will also need to be replaced but the speaker/mic should be fine.

Here's a quick mspaint sketch with the important measurements (I think?) to give rsilk and I something to base our CAD drawing off of:

Ok, so imagine this, but there's a mesh grille in front of the speaker. and an aluminum frame reaching in to the middle part, which is actually cone-shaped and also aluminum (think rocket nosecone)

I have the exact same plate that I want to replace. I am very interested to see what happens with this. Not sure I get the description of the mesh and frame. Does the frame push the cone into the mesh?

I was actually going to run by B&E and look for some new buttons. Unfortunately the shit hit the fan at work and I am out of

I was over at rsilk's today and we did a quick prototype, uploaded a short vid of the CNC in action to YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeqSxikfXBQ

Also, some pics:

Ryan: All the measurements were good. Screw holes line up perfectly.

Ok I am starting to see that would could look good. Will have to do some stain tests when I get back to see if I can get something to match my trim reasonably.

So how has this been going. Kaldonis, have you installed it yet?

After attempting the paint on MDF and a couple other pieces of real wood I am thinking a nice wood finish would be better. The paint just doesn't take well, and on primed MDF the finish is just too different than the wall. Looks like it is trying to blend in but failing horribly.

So Ryan what do I have to do to get you to mill me one?

I've become side-tracked with other projects and haven't done any more work on this. I do plan to return to it soon. I think all that was really left for me was to order buttons and a speaker grille.

Where were you looking for buttons and grill. If we find some good ones we mind as well order together I plan on doing mine up right away.
