Let's get some awesome new tools!

Discussions on anything related to the evolving idea of Saskatoon's first "makerspace". What is a makerspace to you? What should it be called? What's the charter?

Let's get some awesome new tools!

It was deemed to be a good idea at the AGM that we decide what tools to buy then start accepting donations for them. This first post will keep an updated list of the tools we decide on and how much money we have raised towards each.

Lasercutter - model TBD - cost unknown - current amount pledged $500

3D printer - model TBD - cost unknown - current amount pledged $0

Vacuumformer (forum thread) - DIY style - cost $100ish - we have the heater, now just need to build the box and attach the vacuum

Feel free to suggest new tools, and discuss the current options below.

Lasersaur
and
Buildlog
are two suggested open source laser printers.

Electronics tools:
  • Logic analyzer
  • Spectrum analyzer
  • Hot air rework station
  • Better basic tools (pana-vise, third-hand, etc.)
  • Board etching system (I think we have most of what we need, but we are still missing pieces)
  • Maybe a 200-in-1 electronics kit for beginners?

Woodworking tools:
  • Table saw
  • Band saw
  • Planer
  • Lathe

Hand tools:
  • Better screw drivers (some are already quite worn)
  • Wrenches and socket wrenches
  • Pliers (especially needle-nose)
  • Hole saw

In general, I'm trying to think simple; there are still a lot of basic tools that we either don't have or could use more/better ones.

I can get any of the handtools you need. I have an etching kit.

If someone finds/makes some plans for the box and whatnot for the vacuum former, I'll be happy to build it.

My #1 wishlist item: a truck.
