Hello!

My name is Jeff Dyer, and I have an addiction to electronics.

I know a couple people on here already, and some of the other names look familiar as friends of friends.

I was informed of this group from one of my friends at the Calgary Hackerspace. I've always been interested in starting one of these up since seeing the Calgary one, but, didn't know how to go about finding a mass of people with the common interest. I graduated from Computer Engineering Technology at SIAST, which was really just a way to let me learn more about my little electronics hobby. I can be found either in my basement tinkering with things, or at work playing with a big network that most of you might use when you pick up your cellphone.

I like hardware and micro controllers, but, it's been too long since I've done any real programming besides 8051 assembler and PHP.

I'm Travis Schmidt and I got my start with Kilobots.

I went to SIAST Kelsey to be an electronics technician and now I work for Scientific Instrumentation Ltd, where I get paid to build robots.

I still build Kilobots and I like to tinker around with other things too. You can see some of my projects at Instructables, where I keep trying (and failing ) to win lasers and stuff.

Hey everyone..

Had a beer with a guy who brought a guy who mentioned something about a hacker space in Saskatoon which led me here..

I'm Jason. CS degree from U of S. Like some of you I've put in time at Wavecom/VCom/Vecima. Primary interest is software development (C,C++,Java,Python) where my days are spent coding various network monitoring applications for good and maybe some evil. To be honest I probably like the idea of a hackerspace more than I'd use one. But a change of view for a few hours of coding now and then and bouncing non-work project ideas off others could be cool.

Tyler here, finished my mechanical engineering degree last spring. Addicted to Arduinos and Processing. Hoping to get into rapid prototyping (RepRap, MakerBot). I also have an incredible affection to bicycles.

My name is Taylor and, unlike most of you I don't have a clue who anyone here is. I stumble on the forum through a (slightly) miss guided google search result while trying to find a place to buy electronic components in Saskatoon.

A little about me - I just moved to the city last April (although I've been in Saskatchewan for the better part of three years.) when I got married. Since I'm from the States ( don't judge me until you meet me... ) I'm current waiting on immigrations stuff so I can't work right now so I started the electronics technician distance program from George Brown College. I've been fascinated by electronics and anything technical since I operate a screw driver to take apart my toy remote controlled semi-truck when I was 7 or 8. In 8th grade I fail my computer class because I was to busy doing web design and playing starcraft with friends.

My Interest may not be as vast as my actual skill set but I love learning new things and making things, anything really. I am also a Electronics student now and really like the idea of having a place to work on projects and apply me knowledge and have bouncy ideas and question off of. I like sharing my passion and knowledge with others that want to know more.

I look forward to possible meeting some of you!

Welcome to Saskatoon! In case you are still looking for electronics parts, the two major places in town are B&E Electronics and EP Supply. I usually go to B&E because they have a better selection. It's good for chemicals and standard parts (resistors and capacitors), but if you need specific ICs, you will probably need to order them in. They also tend to be quite expensive.

Most of us order directly from Canadian wholesalers. The two major ones I'm familiar with are DigiKey and Mouser Electronics. Both have decent prices, though shipping costs a bit, so it's best to buy things in bulk. If you ask around here, you can probably find a couple of people who are looking to order something and you can combine your orders and split the shipping costs.

I love the story of the toy semi truck. My parents used to get furious because I would always ask for R/C cars for Christmas, but I would dismantle them within the week. Oh well, it was worth the investment.

I don't really 'know' anyone in the group. I heard about the group from an email that Malcolm Whyte sent at the university. My wife forwarded the message, and here I am.

I'm an electrical engineer, working for Potashcorp Allan. I'm not on Facebook (kinda anti-social, paranoid about security). Interested in electronics, want to build robots, lately interested in the Reprap and an open source CNC machine, MyCNC.

I have lots of ideas, not so much ambition, and I never met a project that I could finish.

I've got some experience on micro-controllers - 6502, 8031, 8051 .. PLCs, industrial controls - mostly digital. I tell lots of (old) stories and put many people to sleep.

Welcome! We're having a meeting next tuesday (location TBA, but it'll be posted). If you can make it, that'd be a great way to meet the rest of the crew. We've got several robotics guys, a couple with CNC machines going, and I think someone mentioned that they were building a 3d printer (not sure which one).
